Ashburton

Ashburton Quakers have acquired a Meeting House, the first new Meeting House of the 21st C. Five years to the day from when Friends held their first Thursday evening Meeting in Ashburton, we collected the keys to The Old Chapel, Foales Court, Ashburton; better known to locals as Church’s wood store.  Within minutes we were sitting on two wood sawing benches, amongst the racking holding a quiet Meeting of thanks.

Ashburton meeting house started life as a pair of terraced cottages back in the 1600’s and was converted to a Gospel Hall, when the railway came to Ashburton in the mid 19th C. For the past 50 years it has been used as a wood store for the local hardware shop and has become a little dilapidated inside, but dry and sound in construction. We hope to add luxuries like heating and water over the next couple of years.

We are a growing Meeting set up to serve spiritual needs in Ashburton under the governance of Totnes Meeting

PM Dates
To be held generally the Sunday before Devon Area Meeting

Events We held a very successful Open Day on June 5th 2010, when proposed plans for the development of the Meeting House were displayed.  About 60 visitors were welcomed.  We took part in One World Week 2011

Just after the end of our first year in our Meeting House, basic work has been started there.  The electrics have been updated and water has been brought to the building.   As mentioned above, work has now started on the roof and one of the walls.  We shall then have important decisions to make about future plans for the building.   Our aim is for a place primarily of Quaker worship, which will be welcoming, of use to the wider community, simple and sustainable.   We aim to consult with all interested parties as often as possible along our challenging anf inspiring journey.

Notices
On Christmas Day we will be holding a short, simple Meeting for Worship in the Meeting House at 10.30am.  It is cold in there at present, but the welcome will be warm.  Please be aware that building work will, we hope, soon be in progress and that care is needed.
